Las Vegas Is One Of The Most Dangerous Cities For Pedestrians

A recent study found that Las Vegas is one of the most dangerous cities in the country for pedestrians.

When people choose to travel on foot, they must rely on motorists operating their vehicles safely and taking precautions to avoid pedestrian traffic. Unfortunately, motorists do not always do so, leading to dangerous pedestrian accidents.

According to a recent study, Las Vegas is one of the most dangerous cities in the United States forpedestrians. The study – Dangerous By Design – was conducted by Smart Growth America and the National Complete Streets Coalition.

Overall, the researchers found that Las Vegas was the ninth most dangerous city in the country when it came to the percentage of pedestrians that made up overall traffic fatalities. In total, over 20 percent of all traffic deaths in Las Vegas were pedestrians from 2003 to 2012.

In fact, a large percentage of the pedestrian deaths in Nevada take place here in Clark County. During the period from 2003 to 2012, a total of 540 pedestrians died in collisions with motor vehicles in Nevada – of those, 413 of the fatal accidents took place in Clark County.

According to the Nevada Department of Transportation, the number of pedestrian fatalities has been on the rise in recent years. In 2012, 59 pedestrians were killed in Nevada – that figure jumped to 70 pedestrian deaths in 2013.

As a result of this rising trend, Nevada has joined the zero fatalities campaign, which is aimed at reducing traffic deaths to zero. One aspect of the campaign is ensuring motorists are “pedestrian safe,” meaning they adhere to all traffic laws and are aware of pedestrians while on the road.

Avoid A Dangerous Pedestrian Accident In Las Vegas

The Nevada Department of Transportation has tips for motorists and pedestrians alike, when traveling in Nevada. For instance, pedestrians should always use crosswalks when possible, and motorists must yield to pedestrians crossing the street in crosswalks.

If a road lacks a sidewalk, pedestrians should always walk toward oncoming traffic. In addition, motorists are expected to act with caution to avoid accidents with pedestrians. Due to the size and speed of motor vehicles, the impact with a pedestrian will ultimately be more severe for the individual traveling on foot.

When someone is injured or killed in a pedestrian accident, the responsible party should be held accountable for the damage done in the crash. If you or someone you love has been injured in a pedestrian accident, contact a qualified lawyer at one of the pedestrian injury law firms in las vegas.
